Tiawannah “ Tia” Calhoun

K-12 Academic Advisor - Hollywood & Trail

I am Tiawannah Calhoun also known as “Tia”, born in West Palm Beach and raised in Riviera Beach, Florida. I am the oldest of five children, so setting a great example for my siblings has always been a priority for me.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.  It is an incredible feat to work full time and manage so many things while also pursuing a master’s degree!  I feel college prepared me for my career and different life scenarios. Going to college has also motivated my mother to get back into school and pursue her GED and she is now attending nursing school to become a RN.  As a lifelong learner, I know that education has the capacity to change lives for generations to come.

I discovered my passion for education and love for working with students while working as an assistant advisor at Florida Atlantic University; 2nd thru 4th grade teacher and team leader for four years; teaching math to middle and high school students for two years; summer youth counselor for three years; adjunct professor for Palm Beach State College for summer courses and now I am privileged to be the K-12 Academic  Advisor for the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Education Department.  Having taught a variety of grade levels has been such a valuable part of my professional and personal exploration and growth as a person.  I enjoy building meaningful relationships with students, family members and staff in order to collaborate in supporting students as they reach their fullest academic potential.  Working with great students, colleagues, and parents - is a bonus!

The Education Department is a place where students, staff and parents feel connected and respected and I believe all of this creates an atmosphere that fosters a respect for education and the possibilities that it creates.  I also like the fact that as the K-12 Academic Advisor, I get to encourage students’ personal growth as well as their academic growth.  I love being a part of this community and look forward to working together with you as partners in ensuring your child’s educational growth and development!  Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, and we can work on a solution together.

Outside of work, I enjoy a nice dinner on one of the beautiful patios of our incredible restaurants here in South Florida, cooking and spending LOTS of time with family, friends, and especially my dog, Max.  He keeps me busy and entertained, and I’m enjoying every second of it!
